Life Set Sail KNOW YOUR WORTH

A few words from Brittany of Life Set Sail: Who of you has a blog? If you do have one, is it something you make an income off of or strictly a hobby? I’ve been at this for a number of years now and I feel like the blogging world has changed a lot in the last 5 years (how’s that for an understatement).

Most people I know these days have a blog of some sorts, but there are very few I know personally that make their living off of it. For me, blogging has always been something I love to do…and if you love something so much, why not try to make a career out of it (that’s the dream isn’t it, to love your job)? But making a living, well, that’s much harder.

The image you put out into the word is what others will expect of you…for me, it’s beautiful photos. And you know, to get those beautiful I need to hire a photographer – because we all know taking photos of yourself ain’t easy! So, if someone is asking me to essentially do free work for them, well, it’s a bit unfair because it’s not only my time that’s being volunteered in that situation. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE collaborations, supporting small businesses and the like – so please don’t ever feel like you can’t reach out because of this post.

I adore creating beautiful, inspiring, and honest content, but we all need help. In order to continue putting out the quality of work I do, well, I’ve got to make some good cash-oh-lah! So how does that even work? Think about it, think about the people doing what you do as a career (writing, advertising, modelling, whatever). You can bet they’re not doing it for free. And you know, I’m not trying to make it sound like I’m some money hungry blogger, I’m just trying to get you (who may want to make a living off of your blog) to realize your worth. You have a service to offer that others want. It’s as simple as that.

So maybe it’s time to reflect on what you actually want out of your blog…

Maybe you just want it to remain a hobby (and that’s totally cool)! Hey…I do this because I love it, not because it’s making me rich! It has to start with you right? If I did this for anyone else, well, I wouldn’t!
